Like a Child
I just watching a very adorable scene as I was eating lunch in a local mall a few minutes ago. There was a little girl who probably wasn’t even two years old yet toddling around closely followed by who appeared to be her older brother and sister. I wish I could have taken a little video clip of the cuteness, as this was a little Chinese baby girl who was just too cute for words!

Her older siblings were anxiously watching her to make sure she didn’t try to go down the escalator that was close by, and which she continually tried to go toward. They tried all sorts of things to get her interest elsewhere, but she would have none of it. She walked around like she owned the world and knew exactly what she was doing and how to get where she was going. Of course, it was so funny because she as an adult we realize that she has no ability to care for herself or get anywhere without outside help. Would it have helped for her older brother to explain to her the dangers of the escalator for a baby of her age who barely was walking yet? Of course not. She couldn’t even begin to comprehend any of the concepts involved and she wouldn’t have listened to begin with.
As I watched their interaction, I was struck with the thought that we are so often just like that little girl. We live as if we are running our own lives, as if we have the knowledge and ability to comprehend what is in the future or to control it in some way. We are so often stubborn and independent. We so often have questioning hearts when God withholds something from us that we are sure is harmless or even good for us. Sometimes we even think, if He would just tell me why He’s doing what He’s doing, I would be fine. Do we really think we have the capacity to understand the mind of God and his ways? Not according to His Word.
But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, “Why have you made me like this?”
Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! “For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?”
Sadly, I’m afraid, we don’t even think about God’s part in the equation at all. We are merely making our own plans, and living life as if it completely revolved around us independent from any outside help. How foolish, and I’m so often guilty of this thinking!
It would probably be wise to consider some of the questions that God asked to Job. Where were you when God formed the Earth? Do you understand how snow is made, why the weather changes, how your heart beats within your chest and the millions of cells within you perform innumerable tasks without you even realizing it? Were you alive when Almighty God simply spoke the entire universe into existence? A universe that is so vast we can’t not even comprehend how minuscule our earth is in comparison, yet God says he could cover it with the span of His hand. Do you know how many hairs are on your head at this very second, or each time a flower is crushed or a sparrow falls? Do you know the beginning of time to the end in infinite detail? Do you understand the secrets of men’s hearts, the circumstances that are to come, the sorrows, joys, and fears of over six billion people all at one time?
The wonderful news is that God does! He knows the beginning from the ending, and He has a perfect plan for you! If you are God’s child, you can safely rest in His care and guidance. He’s given us His Word to know Him, His Spirit to teach, guide, and comfort us, His Son to intercede for us, and His faithfulness to care for us each day. Let this be our mindset instead.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil.”
